The third graders learned 3 steps to making a good decision: Define what decision you are making, Brainstorm your options, Consider the consequences and Choose the best option. We applied these steps to various decisions we might be asked to make during the day such as what to order at a restaurant, whether to do homework or play video games and whether to go along with what our friends are doing or make a different choice.
We ended the lesson by reading The Book of Bad Ideas by Laura Huliska-Beith. This book is always a favorite among 3rd graders. Each student created their own "bad idea" and then listed the steps to making a good decision and brainstormed ways the person in each picture could make a good choice.
