For this lesson, I gave each of the students 4 shapes that were identical in color, size and shape. The students listened to the short story of how each shape felt that they were superior to all the others until one day when a conflict occurs. During this conflict, one of the rectangles becomes so angry that it leaps into the air and lands on the back of two circles creating a wagon. From this day on, the shapes begin to recognize each others unique strengths and their ability to do great things when they work together. We discussed the lesson to this story and ways this fictional story can be like real life.
After the story, the students shared & traded shapes with their classmates to create a picture. Here are a few samples of the art the 3rd graders created.
