This week our 1st graders were shown the two boxes pictured here. They were very excited when they were told that they would have the opportunity to vote for the box that they wished to open and could even have whatever was inside the box.
We contrasted the two boxes making a list of the differences between the two boxes. Some of the words the 1st graders used to describe the first box included: shiny, new, clean, colorful, beautiful, big, from a nice store, happy. The second box was described as: dirty, old, small, brown, scribbled on, sad, lonely, ugly and from a "garbage store". We also discussed the differences in the way each of our outside "wrapping" looks and how just as it was unknown what was inside the boxes, there were many things someone would not know about us just by observing our physical characteristics and outward appearance.
When it was time to vote, you can probably guess which box was the winner. The students were surprised by the contents of the boxes. We emphasized that just like the boxes, the "treasure" is the kind of person we are on the inside. We ended by reading the book: Whoever You Are by Mem Fox--this is a beautiful book that I would highly recommend for your child's personal library if you don't already own it.
